Ancora sangue nella terra di Abramo

La notizia di questi ultimi giorni, con un numero altissimo di morti, oltre 165, vittime di una strage con autobombe a Baghdad, centinaia di feriti, numerosi dispersi tra cui molti bambini, non può essere accolta con rassegnazione, come se avessimo fatto l’abitudine a tutta questa violenza.
La guerra è ‘avventura senza ritorno’ come ci ammoniva Giovanni Paolo II. E la situazione in Iraq ne è la tragica conferma! Questo vale per tutte le guerre, non solo in Iraq. Non ci sarà pace se si percorrono solo le strade della violenza, del terrorismo, della guerra.
Una delegazione di Pax Christi International è tornata dall’Iraq un mese fa.
Anche per questo non possiamo e non vogliamo dimenticare le tante persone incontrate sul posto, che ci chiedevano un impegno per la pace, contro ogni guerra e violenza. E’ un momento molto difficile per l’Iraq, per tutta la popolazione, che torna a vivere nella paura, senza speranza per il futuro. Nei vari incontri in Iraq e dai molti amici che sentiamo quasi quotidianamente, ci viene chiesto di non essere dimenticati, di fare pressione perché davvero si lavori per la pace e la riconciliazione, non per la divisione ma per il bene di tutti.
Sono loro a ricordarci che questo conflitto è più politico che religioso, e si prevede un aumento delle violenze in questo periodo che precede le elezioni fissate a gennaio 2010.

Ci rivolgiamo a tutta la comunità internazionale, alla politica, alla società civile, alla Chiesa, a tutti quelli che dicono di avere a cuore l’Iraq e chiediamo:

Ci sia un autentico impegno a fianco della popolazione di tutto l’Iraq,

non attraverso la guerra, la violenza, le armi. Perché la violenza genera altra violenza.

Ci sia un impegno per il dialogo e per il bene comune di tutto il Paese, non solo per i propri interessi. E in Iraq gli interessi economici e politici sono molti e attirano anche molte presenze straniere.

Il ricordo e la preghiera siano per le vittime, per tutte le vittime.

Conosciamo il numero e il nome dei soldati americani, inglesi o italiani uccisi in Iraq ma non conosciamo neanche approssimativamente il numero, né il nome, delle migliaia e migliaia di persone irachene uccise dalla guerra e dal terrorismo. Bambini, donne, uomini, tutte vittime della follia della violenza.

Ricordare solo i ‘nostri’, gli occidentali e dimenticare le vittime irachene sarebbe un’ulteriore violenza, un crimine nei loro confronti, che non aiuta a costruire un futuro di pace.

The recent news about the huge number of casualties, more than 165, victims of a massacre caused by car bombs in Baghdad, cannot be accepted with resignation, as if we got used to all that violence.

The war is “adventure with no coming back”, as Pope John Paul II warned us. And the Iraqi situation tragically confirms it! This can be applied to every conflict, not only to Iraq. There won’t be peace if only paths of violence, terrorism and war are followed.

A delegation from Pax Christi Internationalcame back from Iraq a month ago. That is also why we cannot and do not want to forget the many people we met there, who asked us for a commitment to peace, against every war and violence. It is a very difficult moment for Iraq and its entire population, who is again experiencing fear, without a hope for the future. During the various meetings in Iraq and from the many friends we are in contact with nearly every day, we are asked not to forget them, to lobby for a real peace and reconciliation work, not for divisions, but for everyone’s wellbeing.

They are the ones who remind us that this is more a political rather than a religious conflict, and that an increase of violence is expected in this period up to the elections fixed for January 2010.

We address ourselvesto the whole international community, to politics, to the civil society, to the Church, to all those who say they have Iraq in their heart and we ask for:

A genuine engagement next to the people of the entire Iraq, not through war, violence, and weapons. Since violence only generates further violence.

An engagement for dialogue and for a shared wellbeing of the entire country, not just for own interests. And the economic and political interests are many in Iraq and attract many foreign presences.

The memory and pray be for the victims, for all victims.

We know the number and the names of American, English or Italian soldiers who were killed in Iraq, but we do not even approximately know the number nor the names of the thousands Iraqi people killed by war and terrorism. Children, women, men all victims of the madness of violence. Remember just “ours”, the Western people, and forget about the Iraqi victims would be a further violence, a crime against them, that does not help to build a future of peace.
