Giornata internazionale per l'eliminazione totale delle armi nucleari - ONU

Il raggiungimento del disarmo nucleare globale è uno degli obiettivi più antichi delle Nazioni Unite. Fu oggetto della prima risoluzione dell'Assemblea Generale nel 1946, che istituì la Commissione per l'energia atomica (sciolta nel 1952), con il mandato di formulare proposte specifiche per il controllo dell'energia nucleare e l'eliminazione delle armi atomiche e di tutte le altre grandi armi adattabili alla distruzione di massa. Da allora le Nazioni Unite sono state in prima linea in molti importanti sforzi diplomatici per far avanzare il disarmo nucleare. Nel 1959, l'Assemblea Generale ha approvato l'obiettivo del disarmo generale e completo. Nel 1978, la prima sessione speciale dell'Assemblea generale dedicata al disarmo ha ulteriormente riconosciuto che il disarmo nucleare dovrebbe essere l'obiettivo prioritario nel campo del disarmo.
