K S Dakshina Murthy Al Jazeera With the United States-led troops entering Tikrit, the invading forces now control much of Iraq. But the situation throws up several questions: First, with (President ?) Saddam Hussein not seen in public since the US takeover of Baghdad, what is his status ? When is the invasion going to be complete ? In the absence of either a formal surrender of the Iraqi government and its military forces or the assassination of key government figures including Saddam Hussein, it is anyone’s guess when the US will formally declare the war over. Until then, how does one characterize Saddam Hussein ? Does he remain “President” or a mere “Iraqi leader”, or better still just plain and simple Saddam Hussein. And the government ?
