21 luglio 2011

I raduni di CAN attualmente in fase di organizzazione sono previsti a New York City/New Jersey, in Illinois, California, Connecticut, Vermont, Ohio, Michigan, Virginia e Florida e ogni giorni nuovi stati si aggiungono all’elenco. Blackwelder è Presidente Emerito di “Friends of the Earth”.

Ha anche co-fondato l’International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War che ha vinto il Premio Nobel per la Pace nel 1985 e ha scritto otto libri, tra i quali "If You Love This Planet;" "War in Heaven," "Nuclear is Not The Answer," "Nuclear Danger," and "Nuclear Madness."

Articolo in inglese:

Sometimes reality around you begins to change when you least expect it. Right at those moments when it seems like none of those groups who in the past would have fought are doing it any more, others who have the same idea as you decide that the time has come to act even if you're on your own, without waiting for others to do it on your behalf-

It was like that for my friend Michael Leonardi just a few weeks ago, as he considered with trepidation his return to Ohio, in the heart of the USA. Micheal had been fully involved throughout the referendum campaigns in Italy for public water and against nuclear power, and he was not feeling full of enthusiasm at the thought of the passage from that Italian reality, profoudly shaped by the victories in those referendums, to the reality of the United States, scarred instead by so much disillusionment with the Obam administration, over the war, health reforms, lack of immigrants' rights and economic policy. He was having to face returning to a country where that disappointment had led to the comeback of a Reublican Party so backward-looking that it does not even recognize the existence of climate change influenced by human beings.

And yet something was moving, and just a few days after his return Michael involved me via Facebook in a new network of activists, the Coalition Against Nukes, or CAN, which since then has not stopped growing. I have to admit that I didn't even think it was possible myself at the start, but now it seems that so many people are finding an opportunity in that network to return to the struggle, or to struggle for the first time, and there'll also be many who never stopped struggling for a different world but now find themselves in the company of people they never knew before. These are people who were horrified by the catastrophe of Fukushima, and who, faced with support from the whole US establishment, Democrat and Republican, for nuclear power, decided the time had come to rely on their own strength.

PRESS RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CAN, COALITION AGAINST NUKES, "CALL TO ACTION RALLIES"

July 21, 2011

Determined grassroots anti-nuclear and environmental activists, concerned citizens, and members of all political parties are cooperatively organizing “CALL TO ACTION RALLIES," synchronized no-nukes rallies planned for entire US, coast to coast including capitol cities all on Oct. 1st.

An unprecedented, global nuclear disaster occurred in Japan on March 11, 2011. This incident of extreme criticality is still ongoing at the Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant with multiple meldowns in various stages. There are over 100 nuclear power reactors in the US often getting re-licensed by a method appearing to be a rapid "rubberstamping" by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission allowing them to generate nuclear power for extensions up to 60 years.

Members of CAN are all in agreement that a massive, global pro-nuclear public relations campaign is long in place offering no apologies whatsoever how or why the generating of nuclear power is actually not SAFE, not CLEAN, not GREEN.

CAN's rallies presently organizing are NYC/NJ, IL, CA, CT, VT, OH, MI, VA, and FL with more states organizing daily. The NYC/NJ rally (in sync with NYC's Green Festival Oct 1,2) starts at 10:30 AM @Pier 84 (Hudson River Park, NYC) lasting til 1PM with a kickoff speech at 11AM by Brent Blackwelder, President Emeritus of Friends of the Earth. Brent was a founder and first chairman on board of American Rivers and co-founder of Environmental Policy Institute, which merged with Friends of the Earth in 1989.

Dr. Helen Caldicott is CAN's keynote speaker at the NYC/NJ rally and also at the NYC Green Festival which CAN is working closely with to cross pollinate information about unclean, ungreen, globally toxic nuclear power. Dr Caldicott has devoted most of her life relentlessly campaigning about the toxic effects of nuclear power all over the planet. She received the Humanist of the Year award from American Humanist Association in 1982 and co-founded Physicians for Social Responsibility, a group of 23,000 doctors concerned about the dangers of nuclear power and weapons.

She co-founded the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985 and also wrote eight books, among them "If You Love This Planet;" "War in Heaven," "Nuclear is Not The Answer," "Nuclear Danger," and "Nuclear Madness."

Harvey Wasserman has over thirty years of activism against nuclear power and a co-founder of the Clamshell Alliance. He has authored many books including “Solartopia: Our Green-Powered Earth" and is a regular contributor to the Huffington Post and other journals as well as a weekly talk show.

Kevin Kamps is an internationally renowned radioactive waste expert working at Beyond Nuclear, a non-profit foundation in Tacoma Park, Maryland. Kamps' expertise focuses on high-level waste management & transportation, new & existing reactors, decommissioning of reactors, Congress watchdog and climate change.

Karl Grossman is an award winning international journalist, professor of journalism at SUNY Old Westbury, the author of six books exposing global "nuclear cover-ups" and an environmental videographer.
